I went outside to sweep the paint scraps from scraping the paint on the porch bannister yesterday, scraps I’d meant but forgotten to sweep yesterday because the day swept me a different direction instead. So today after I finished writing the things I wanted to write, which I did after waking up at 4 with Flo, getting out of bed at 4:30, walking with her by 5:25 and doing my arms workout on our return, then making breakfast and coffee to have while I wrote, then sitting with Flo to order some prints with her because she always loves seeing baby pictures of herself and I’m oriented toward doing today, after all that I went outside to get the broom from the garage to sweep the paint scraps. When I got back to the porch with the broom I heard Flo calling me to wipe, because she’d gone poop. On my way to the bathroom I saw the washing machine lid and the gritty grimy build-up where the lid meets the rest of the machine, a spot I’d meant to scrub two days ago but something scrubbed me another direction, so I wiped for Flo and washed my hands then got the straw cleaner, put a paper towel on it and bristled the grit mostly away, with the intent to do another round later. Then I lit a candle because I wanted to do it before forgetting, and I swept up the popcorn Flo had spilled and had attempted to sweep on her own but then phoned a friend (me) for help. As I was doing this, the joy of my life, the essence of my living, I thought of how I still had yet to sweep the paint scraps but I did not think it was scattered, I did not think it was disorganized. It was tuned, fine tuned to needs, eminently adjustable and imminently adjusting, a sign of dedication and training, athleticism, to be able to pivot and retain, pivot and retain, across the long term. Oh maybe it can be tagged “scattered,” the only problem with that is it carries connotations of badness, of lacking, of weakness, of shortcoming. But scattering is successful sowing. The question is, can I hang with it? Go…with…the…flow. Which reminds me, I need to call the Ford dealership. Surf babies!
